YOUNG Army cadets from all over the region were visited by a member of the top brass during a training exercise in County Durham.
More than 140 cadets from Coxhoe, Durham, Horden, Houghton le Spring, Seaham, Shiney Row, and Ushaw Moor Light Infantry detachments, and Wingate Light Dragoons were involved in a challenging weekend of military training at Stainton Camp, near Barnard Castle, County Durham.
And they had to ensure they were looking their best when they were paid a visit by Brigadier David Shaw, officer commanding 15 Brigade, based at York.
He saw the cadets in various aspects of military training, including fieldcraft, shooting, drill, skill at arms, and other aspects of self-reliance, and spoke to many of them about their pastime. He then met officers and instructors over a working lunch. The senior cadets carried out a tactical exercise at Warcop training area and six of the most senior were successful in the weapon handling assessments.
Sergeant Paul Fullard, an adult instructor at Ushaw Moor detachment, said: "The cadets really enjoyed the opportunity to speak to such a high ranking officer and the entire Company benefited from such a comprehensive training weekend".
Durham Army Cadet Force is looking for cadets to train for this year's annual camp at Otterburn and also for adult instructors.
No experience is necessary as full on the job training will be given. For details, call Major Steve Ramsey on 0191-388 2351.
