A SCHOOL has launched a bid to raise £12,000 for a sensory garden.
Teachers, children and parents at St Hild's Primary School in Gilesgate, Durham, are working together with Groundwork East Durham to create a garden in front of the school, which should appeal to children's senses of smell, touch, hearing and sight and make outdoor learning more enjoyable.
The project has been kick-started with a £200 donation from the Three Rivers Housing Group.
Headteacher Jane Katsambis said: "We are all looking forward to developing a new, pleasant and stimulating learning environment. The garden will be a valuable resource for us.
"The early donation from Three Rivers is gratefully received and we are now hoping that we will be able to raise the full amount to put the plan into action."
Plans for the garden include a water feature, ornamental grass which will make sounds in the wind, a snaking path made from textured paving stones and plants chosen to attract insects and butterflies.
Anyone who wishes to contribute towards the fundraising, can contact Mrs Katsambis on 0191-384 7451.
