A DAY unit for cancer patients has received a welcome financial boost thanks to the intellectual efforts of pub regulars.
Staff from the unit at the Friarage Hospital, in Northallerton, are hoping to buy a diathermy machine to help patients with cancer.
The machine, which costs more than £7,000, helps detect the early symptoms of cancer of the bowel. So far more that £5,500 has been raised.
Fortnightly quiz nights at the Golden Lion, in nearby Romanby, have added £1,000 to the total.
A hospital spokesman said: "A big thank- you to landlord Stephen Cave and quiz master Harold Bartram, and to everyone who took part in raising this fantastic amount, which will be put to good use in helping local people."
Anyone wishing to help the campaign is asked to contact ward clerk Pauline Forster, at the hospital, on (01609) 764847.
