A CHANCE conversation led to a sizeable donation to Richmond's Friary Hospital.
Pet shop owner John Meynell was telling his Finkle Street neighbour Mackenzie Thorpe about the high standard of care provided by the hospital staff when his mother was ill.
The famous Middlesbrough-born artist was so impressed by his neighbour's conviction he decided to donate an original painting as a sign of the town's gratitude.
The work, entitled Veil over Yorkshire, was unveiled in the hospital lobby by Richmond MP and former Conservative leader,William Hague.
However, 850 prints of the painting also went on the market - and one was offered in a money-spinning raffle which also helped to raise essential cash for the Friary Hospital.
Winner Debbie Hyatt was presented with the top prize - worth an estimated £500 - at a special ceremony at the Mackenzie Thorp Arthaus.
Sister Doris Walker, from the Friary Hospital, joined her at the art gallery, and received a cheque for £543, raised by the raffle.
