SOME of the biggest names in dance music will have Tyneside bouncing in a major music festival starting this weekend.

DJ Pete Tong and chart band Moloko head a bill of dance music stars and DJs, as well as indie favourites the Inspiral Carpets and reggae legend Gregory Isaacs.

They are performing in Newcastle and Gateshead as part of the Orange Evolution festival, taking place over 12 days - and most of it is free.

Festival co-ordinator Jim Mawdsley said: "We're really excited about the depth of music represented in the Orange Evolution line-up. It truly reflects the ethos of the festival, and will provide a stunning day out for the people of Tyneside. We are delighted to be one of the first major festivals to be part of Newcastle and Gateshead's bid for European Capital of Culture 2008."

Orange's sponsorship manager, Maureen Dixon, said: "This year's event promises to be one of the best music festivals to take place on Tyneside."

The festival has the support and financial backing of Orange, Newcastle City and Gateshead councils, Northern Arts, the Arts Council, One NorthEast and Metro Radio.

The events start on April 24 and culminate in a free all-day festival on both banks of the River Tyne, on Bank Holiday Monday, May 5.

As well as Moloko and Inspiral Carpets, the acts include Grammy winners Dirty Vegas. Other highlights include a party featuring US DJ Erick Morillo in the Baltic Square on Sunday, May 4. Tickets are £20.
