SEDGEFIELD Borough Council solicitor Dennis Hall has been appointed chairman of the Law Society Local Government group.
Mr Hall, who has been with the council since 1983, was born in Stockton, where he attended Grangefield Grammar School and Stockton Sixth Form College. He began his legal career with Teesside law firm Cohen, Jackson, Scott and Simon.
He holds a Masters degree in law and is a legal associate of the Royal Town Planning Institute.
Mr Hall has held a number of positions with the Law Society Group and has been Northern Branch Secretary since 1993.
At the society's annual meeting, Mr Hall said: "Local government lawyers represent a significant and thriving part of the legal profession.
"They contribute significantly to the work of local authorities in a number of important areas, including corporate governance, standards and ethics and work in a number of specialist areas of the law.
"They also contribute significantly in a number of ways to the authorities in which they serve."
The group has resolved to change its name to Solicitors in Local Government.
