VILLAGERS aged from 16 to 60 in Witton Gilbert, near Durham, rallied round when it was decided the cenotaph in Sacriston Lane was in need of restoration.
Fearing it would deteriorate further if they waited and went through the proper council channels, they decided to do the work themselves.
Witton Gilbert and District Working Men's Club committee, the parish council and individuals gave money, while several companies donated the materials needed.
Villagers then spent a couple of weeks restoring the cenotaph, adding a chain around it, replacing broken paving slabs and planting flowers around the base.
The cost of the restoration would otherwise have been at least £2,500.
Club steward John Wilson said: "People of all ages have mucked in and done a marvellous job."
Materials were donated by Durham builders merchant Archibalds, CPS construction, the London Chain Company and Deerness Fencing, based in Esh Winning.
