LITERATURE came to life for a group of Darlington schoolchildren when they met one of their favourite characters.
Pupils at Polam Hall junior school enjoyed a visit from Willy Wonka, created by children's writer Roald Dahl, as part of the school's Book Week and National Bedtime Reading Week.
Willy Wonka read out stories and helped children act out scenes from different books.
Angela Foster, junior school headmistress, said the day was a great success.
She said: "The children thoroughly enjoyed meeting Willy Wonka and were delighted he was able to stay long enough to entertain them with stories and let them get so involved in the storytelling process.
"Roald Dahl is a favourite with children everywhere and Polam Hall is no exception.
"Meeting one of his best-loved characters and hearing him tell the stories really helped bring the tales to life for the girls."
