FROM this newspaper 100 years ago. - Extremely cold weather has prevailed during the Easter holiday, and has continued during the week, with frequent showers of snow and hail. Snow fell heavily in Richmond and Swaledale on Wednesday, and there was a fall of snow at Darlington.
On Tuesday night there was a heavy fall of snow in Swaledale from about 8pm till midnight, by which time there was a thicker covering of snow than has been experienced all winter. Icicles several inches long were hanging from leaves and other projections, and all the ground mantled in winter. Young lambs suffered severely and it was feared great mortality will result.
From this newspaper 50 years ago. - Sir Mortimer Wheeler, the eminent archeologist, who during the past two summers has been excavating the earthworks at Stanwick, between Darlington and Richmond, outlined his conclusions in a radio talk on Sunday. Stanwick, he is certain, is the site of the last stand of the Brigantes and their allies against the Roman invaders. The fortifications enclosed 800 acres and consisted in the main of a ten foot high wall protected by a ditch 50 feet wide and 25 deep, a stupendous engineering feat achieved only by the combined efforts of men, women and children, working day and night.
From this newspaper 25 years ago. - A council is to press for Government legislation on an absolute shocker of a problem, dog dirt on pavements and verges. Stockton probably required a dog warden on top of the existing county council system for rounding up strays.
