A NIGHTCLUB popular with soldiers may be replaced with a supermarket.
The Scorpion, at Catterick Garrison, was frequented by soldiers posted to the base and had a history dating back several decades.
However, with the area earmarked for industrial development, the building closed last summer.
Lidl UK, the British arm of a German supermarket chain, has submitted an application to demolish the building to make way for a superstore, which will be built in conjunction with improvements to the roads.
The application will be discussed by Richmondshire District Council's environment committee when it meets in the next few weeks. Members will have to decide if a retail development can be allowed on land that was set aside for industry.
Last May, the committee rejected an application for a Netto superstore on the site.
