EXTRA patrols are being mounted during the Easter holidays to protect schools in Redcar and Cleveland.
Random checks will be carried out by police officers backed by special constables and police community support officers.
Operation Cooper will run until Sunday, April 27.
PC Christopher Greenwood, who is co-ordinating the patrols, said warnings issued by schools were often ignored.
He said: "It is sad, but some areas become attractive as a location for drinking and drug abuse. Needles and syringes are often found on school grounds and the school buildings themselves become a target for damage and burglary.
"This operation will ensure increased visits at all times to school sites, and those who are found to have committed offences on educational premises will be prosecuted."
Officers will be working with communities and asking members of Neighbourhood Watches to report any youths acting suspiciously
