A SCHOOL is celebrating after two of its teachers were jointly awarded a prize for advancing the teaching of science at primary level.

Joni White and Diane Buckle, from Framwellgate Moor Primary School, County Durham, won a cheque for £100 to spend on science resources.

The national Top Teacher award was organised by the Ariel Stains and Science Schools Programme, an education scheme for nine to 11-year-olds, aligned with the National Curriculum.

It is intended to make science more enjoyable and help pupils discover how science affects their lives through something as simple as washing clothes.

Pupils carry out experiments, classroom activities and homework assignments. They are even asked to design a washing tablet.

Headteacher Margaret Richardson said: "Joni and Diane show great commitment to teaching pupils science and demonstrate real eagerness in promoting an understanding of the subject. The school is very proud of their win."

Science co-ordinator Miss White said: "We are thrilled to accept this honour on behalf of the school. We are always looking for new ways to enrich the teaching of science in the classroom."

Dr John Bailey, technical external relations manager at Procter and Gamble, manufacturer of Ariel soap powder , said: "As a scientist myself, I'm delighted to think we are helping kids get more excited about science and technology. Procter and Gamble has been investing in education and the community for many years and the Ariel programme is a hugely successful example of that investment."
