AN INTERNET service offering doctors access to the latest information on drug abusers has been launched.

Newcastle company ThinkMedicine, which provides on-line training for GPs, nurses and pharmacists, has added a course on the misuse of drugs to its service.

It aims to update the medical profession on changes to the law, following the Government's proposals to reclassify the drug cannabis.

Police from the community safety team in Stanley, County Durham, worked with the firm to produce the programme.

PC Kevin Alder said: "Doctors need to be aware that some of their patients are potentially drug misusers.

"We were happy to work in partnership to get this message of drug awareness across to the medical profession."

Victoria Sunter, of ThinkMedicine, said: "The effects of drug abuse contribute massively to crime and disorder.

"Consequently, the pressure is rising for healthcare professionals to understand and help manage the problem.

"By working with the police, we are able to offer insight into the identification of these drugs, along with the physical and psychological effects they have on the user."
