FOOD well past its sell-by date has gone on display in a Richmond supermarket - but shoppers need not worry.

The Co-op on the town's Friary Field has linked up with the Richmondshire Museum in an initiative it hopes will help generate interest in the town's heritage.

Objects which may have been found in a shopping basket 150 years ago have gone on show amid modern-day consumables.

It is hoped the mobile exhibit will plant the museum in shoppers' minds and, as a result, they may be more likely to pay a visit in future.

"As well as enabling local museums to take their collections out to the community, we hope the showcase will raise awareness and enjoyment of local history," said Richmondshire and Hambleton museums officer, Lynda Powell.

Richmondshire Museum's new season began yesterday and the venue will be open between 10.30am and 4.30pm every day until the end of October.
