Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond had a footballing weekend he won't forget in a hurry.
On Saturday, he saw his beloved Hartlepool United promoted from Division Three in bizarre circumstances.
They lost 4-0 at Scunthorpe, but were promoted because Bournemouth were also defeated.
Then yesterday, it was his turn to make a name for himself on the football field.
He appeared as a second-half substitute for Hartlepool Rugby FC, the team he coaches in the Mike Gough Sports Hartlepool Sunday Morning League, and netted the final goal in an 8-2 win with a stunning diving header.
But moments after his goal, his first of the season, his game was over as he suffered a gash to his shin as he slid in to try to convert a chance.
He was taken to The University Hospital of Hartlepool where his leg was stitched.
"I can't believe it," he said. "We were promoted on Saturday and it was surreal because there were no celebrations. Getting promoted is a great achievement for the town, yet everyone was flat.
"But it's been a great season for Pools and credit to Mike Newell and the players. Pools are at home on Monday and I only hope we can celebrate promotion properly then.''
"Then I scored a great goal myself and ended up getting carried off with a cut leg.''
Mayor Drummond has promised a civic reception and tour of the town on an open top bus to commemorate the club's achievement.
