AN Army unit with its headquarters in Richmond has swept the board at an inter-regiment boxing championship - becoming the first infantry team to win both Army championships in the same year.
The Green Howards lifted the Novice Grade 3 title last month, after a convincing win over The Royal Green Jackets.
But the emphatic 6-3 victory meant some of the Green Howards were moved up a rung - so regimental sergeant major "Robbo" Robinson decided they should also enter a three-day competition for Grade 2/1s at Aldershot.
Cruiserweight, Lance Corporal John Smith, and welterweight, Lance Corporal Mark Humber, both took gold medals while team captain, Lance Corporal McDonald, won silver - which was enough to clinch the tournament.
However, there has been little time for celebration; the men are now back in Ballykelly, Northern Ireland, where the regiment is deployed, supporting the province's police force.
The Green Howards will relocate to Chepstow on the Welsh border in January next year, where they will begin training in jungle warfare.
