TEARS were shed yesterday at the funeral of a Royal Marine who grew up in Guisborough and died fighting in the Gulf.
Chris Maddison was described by his commanding officer as 'a tremendous man who gave everything in everything he did.'
After a moving service at St Mary's Church in Scarborough, where the Maddison family now live, Col David Beavers added: "Chris was a man with a bright future but a sad end.
"It is never easy to go on at times like this; the Marines are a family and losing a member of your family is never easy; you feel it.''
As many as 500 mourners filled the church with another 100 lining the walls of the churchyard to listen to the service, relayed on loudspeakers outside.
After the Last Post signalled the end of the funeral, three volleys of rifle fire rang out as the coffin was carried out.
The 40-minute service was followed by a private cremation.
