Spennymoor A put one hand on the Championship Trophy when they beat the visiting Brandon by the odd point to go into the final match of the season with a three-point lead over Old Shildon.
The Moors took the first three frames of their home match with wins from Eddie Rhodes, Paul Atkinson and Karl Welsh, but Graham Jackson fired back with a 63 break and Brian Graham added the final frame for Brandon.
Old Shildon were taken to the decider before they beat the visiting Meadowfield. Michael Pratt with a 38 break and Jossie Aldworth put the home side ahead but Stephen Hughes with a 51 break and Malcolm Hughes levelled the match. In the decider, Shildon's Charlie Blake beat Ian Hodgson on the black, but the two points gained by Meadowfield could keep them away from relegation.
Willington will need a miracle to avoid relegation after they only took one point from their visit to Cockton Hill to move two points behind Witton Gilbert and four behind Shotton Palms and Meadowfield. The Hill had wins from Andrew Aisbitt with a 49 break, Kevin Mordica, George Chapman and Vickers Bell before Jeremy Martin took the final frame for Willington.
Witton Gilbert only managed one point from the visiting Wheatley Hill A when Ian Renwick put in a 63 break. The remaining frames went to the visitors with wins from Dave Walker, Alan Hall, Dennis Clish and Ronnie Peacock.
Shotton Palms could face relegation after they only scored the first point at Fishburn when John Armstrong won. The home side then took over with wins from Brian Quest, Wayne Oliver with a 31 break, Charlie Hirst and John Griffin.
Despite never having the lead, Newton Aycliffe took the decider against the visiting Sherburn Village. Scott Mallaburn put in a 32 break to put the visitors ahead but Mark Howe knocked in a 40 break to equalise. Alan Green restored the Villagers lead only to see Simon Tweddle level. In the decider Aycliffe's Michael Hewitt beat Peter McGowan.
The shock of the season in the Second Division came when leaders, Wingate went down by the odd point to the visiting Stanley Central and lost their top spot. The home side opened in style when John Bourne put in a 67 break. However the central took three in a row through Norman Rimmington, Walter Cornell and Harry Grimes before Geoff Howe won the final frame for Wingate with a 36 break.
Bearpark took advantage of Wingate's slip to take over at the top following their home whitewash success over Hunwick A, who now are certain for relegation. The Bearpark winners were Glen Morton, David Jackson, Shaun Easter, Alan Smith and Alan Donaldson.
Wheatley Hill B look to be joining Hunwick on the move down to the Third Division after they only took one point from the visiting Ferryhill. The visitors took the first four frames through Bernie Jones, Ian Fawcett, Neil Spender and Glyn Toas before Dave Blyth put the Hill on the scoresheet. Langley Park moved four points ahead of Wheatley Hill B after they beat the visiting Spennymoor B in the decider. Phil Wilson put the Moors ahead but Peter Morgan and Stephen Coates moved the Park ahead. Alan Clarke levelled the match but then Langley Park's Lenny Thompson beat Alan Rowell on the black in the decider.
Newhouse looked to coasting to a maximum victory at Crowtrees A when they had wins from Kevin Allison, Steve Mountain, Ian Dinsdale and John Maddox but Sean Johnston saved the whitewash when he put in a 28 break to take the final frame for the home side.
In the Third Division, Coundon lost their sole ownership of the top spot when they could only beat their hosts at Leeholme B by the odd point. The visitors went into a three-point lead with wins from Frank Nicholson, Mally Ryder and Graham Goulbourn but Ray Gill and Brain Harrison fought back for Leeholme by taking the final two frames.
Sacriston took advantage of Coundon's slip when they only dropped one point to the visiting Crook Belle Vue to move up to share the top spot. Jeff Evans put Sacriston ahead but Gordon Sample levelled. Willy Nixon, Mark Appleby and Dale Evans with a 42 break completed the home victory.
New Durham lost their chance of challenging the two leaders when they dropped two points to the visiting Crowtrees B, who had wins from Bill Edwards and John Hall. The home points came from Brian Birks, Tony Thompson and Phil Garr.
Durham City took the first four points in their home match with Tow Law with wins from Brian Dunn, Michael Pratt, Gary Ward and Barry Stoddart but Ernie McEleavey again capped a good performance by preventing the whitewash.
Leeholme A took the first and last frame of their match at Hunwick B with wins from Karl Thompson and Lawrence Jones. The home side's winners were Tom Ward, John Bate and David Penman.
All competition entry forms must be handed in on 24 April at Meadowfield and all tickets for the Presentation Evening collected and paid for. The Presentation Evening will be held at Spennymoor on Saturday, 17 May.
