Caretaker boss Mick Tait is confident of landing loan star Tom Newey on a permanent basis but admitted any deal for the winger is still far from done.
The Leeds youngster has impressed since joining Darlington on loan last month and Tait was quick to signal his intentions to bring the 20-year-old to the club when his contract with the Elland Road club expires in the summer.
However, Tait remains realistic and believes a deal for the pacy winger may not be as clear-cut.
"We've made a little bit of progress about trying to keep Tom," said Tait.
"It's not just about talking to players though because agents are also involved these days. It isn't as straight forward as it used to be.
"We're hoping to get there because we know the lad enjoys playing for us.
"He gets on well with all the players so hopefully we can keep him here for next season. He would be a big asset to the club."
Newey has made a massive impact since arriving at the club and was on target in the Bank Holiday Monday win over Hull.
"The goal was exactly what we talked about at half-time," said Tait. "We were looking for the players to get the ball in that kind of position from diagonal passes.
"The full-backs were allowing plenty of space and full credit to Bazza.
"He got the ball down, had a couple of touches and found Tom with a great pass. It was a good finish and so was Baz's later on."
l Darlington reserves are in action at Mansfield tomorrow.
