A SUPPORT group for victims of domestic violence has been launched.
The Bridges scheme, based in Stanley, aims to provide support and advice for women who have been mentally or physically abused in the home by husbands, boyfriends or partners.
It hopes to show women that they are not alone and are not helpless.
Durham Constabulary set up the project, in partnership with Derwentside Domestic Violence Forum, after PC Amanda Henderson, a domestic violence officer based in Consett, realised there was a demand for a social club-style group.
PC Henderson said: "We found that a lot of women in this situation felt very isolated and alone.
"We can provide a relaxed, friendly setting, to bring together those who have been abused or are currently having problems. It is not a counselling group - it is more of a social thing."
It aims to build on the success of a web site set up in November last year - www.dv-realityrevealed.org - which offers guidance to abused women on a range of issues, such as getting legal advice, child contact for abusive partners and finding temporary housing.
Meeting arrangements are kept secret for security reasons but anyone interested in joining the group can call Derwentside Domestic Violence Forum on (01207) 591132, or PC Henderson on (0191) 375 2515.
