FIREFIGHTERS rescued a pensioner and his budgerigar from a burning house yesterday.
The brigade was called to the house in Byland Close, on the Lakes Estate, Redcar, east Cleveland, shortly before noon, after reports that a man was trapped.
Using breathing apparatus, they broke in to find a pan alight on a stove, and a man aged between 65 and 70 in the house.
He received a check-up before returning home.
Sub officer Alex Race, said: "We found a small fire. Luckily, there did not seem to be too much fire damage, but there was an amount of damage caused by smoke.
"After we located the man, we found a budgerigar, which we took out of the house."
Two engines from Grangetown attended but were not needed.
