Eight athletes from Richmond and Zetland Harriers competed in an Open Medals Meeting hosted by Gateshead AC on Sunday 20th April at Monkton Stadium, Jarrow.
There was a good turnout of athletes from North Yorkshire and the North East Counties, continuing their preparations for T&F League competition and looking for the medals on offer to the first three fastest/highest/furthest in each event. The Harriers came home with six medals, the lion's share being earned by Sam Stanislaus who has started 2003 as he finished 2002. Last year, Sam was the Northern Counties Under 15 pentathlon Champion and broke the Club's high jump record; this year, having moved-up into the Under 17s, he has opted to concentrate on his jumping. This did not stop him from opening his medal account with a PB 16.6 and second place in the 100m hurdles, followed by another PB in the long jump, adding 26cm in jumping 5m65 for third place and rounding-off his afternoon with a winning clearance of 1m70 in the high jump. Sophie Broadway and Rosie Adams were equally busy, both contesting three events. Sophie chose to compete in three track events whilst Rosie competed on the track in the 100m and 800m and then in the field in the shot putt. Rosie's best effort resulted in a medal for third place in the Under 13 Girls 800m and then elder sister Jo Adams added to the family medal-count with second place in the Under 15 Girls 800m. James Wardman won the Club's sixth medal for third place in the Senior Men's 800m, two places ahead of teammate Ken Harker. Nick Zissler continued his comeback from the knee injury which all-but-ruined his 2002 season with fourth place in the under 17 boys 800m.
RZH results: Under 13 Girls - Rosie Adams 6th 100m 14.5, 3rd 800m 2:43.4 & 4th shot putt 5m73; Under 15 Girls - Jo Adams 2nd 800m 2:34.0; Sophie Broadway 7th 100m 14.0, 6th 800m 2:42.5 & 8th 200m 29.2; Under 17 Boys - Sam Stanislaus 2nd 100m hurdles 16.6, 3rd long jump 5m65 & 1st high jump 1m70; Nick Zissler 4th 800m 2:07.8; Junior/Senior Men - Ken Harker 5th 800m 2:05.4; Matt Prosser 5th 100m 11.8; James Wardman 3rd 800m 1:59.3.
Opening fixtures in the T&F Leagues start this weekend with the Junior/Senior/Veteran Men, now promoted to Division 3NE, competing in the NML at Clairville Stadium, Middlesbrough and the Girls and Boys competing in the newly-combined YAL at the Riverside Stadium, Chester-le-Street.
