A MAN was seriously ill in hospital last night after a drink-fuelled fight broke out at a workingmen's club.
Police were called to Haughton-le-Skerne club in Darlington following an altercation with revellers and committee members.
About 50 people had been attending a private function when several drunken partygoers started causing trouble.
Members of the club committee stepped in to diffuse the situation, but ended up being attacked by a number of guests.
One club member, who is not on the committee, was also assaulted in the fracas and was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital.
He is in the coronary care department and his condition was last night described as serious.
A dozen police officers were called to the club at about 11pm on Sunday but found that the guests involved in the fight had left.
Four people, who are all from the town, were apprehended some time later.
They were being questioned at Darlington police station last night.
Inspector Phil Curtis, of Darlington Police, said: "A number of people were assaulted following an altercation on the premises.
"One man was taken to hospital and he is still in a serious condition. There had been a private function at the club and because of the alcohol involved, an issue arose with that which led to fighting."
Anybody who witnessed the incident or who has any information is asked to contact Darlington police station on (01325) 467681 or Crimestoppers on (0800) 555 111.
