Joanne Fleming's new venture - Farmhouse Tearooms - has proved a major attraction at Newham Grange Leisure Farm.
Miss Fleming, who was out of mainstream work for some time, enlisted the help of the national business support organisation InBiz to establish her cafe at the Middlesbrough Council-run visitor facility.
The-33-year-old said: "I was a bit nervous about taking such a big step, but my business advisor has helped me all the way along.
"The New Deal programme prepared me for all the ins and outs of running my own business, things like bookkeeping, tax, health and safety issues."
Bill Milburn, InBiz area manager for the Tees Valley, said: "When Joanne came to us her enthusiasm was evident, and we are delighted that we have been able to help her turn a dream into a reality."
