STAFF at one of the region's oldest theatres will say a big thank-you to its supporters with a free party this weekend.
The Empire Theatre, in Consett, re-opened in March after a nine-month closure and a £700,000 refurbishment.
Venue bosses have organised a one-off concert for Saturday and have issued hundreds of free tickets for all those who contributed to the upgrade.
Theatre manager Nick Wiggins said: "Although the venue has been operating for some weeks now, there was always a general feeling that we couldn't officially recognise the opening of the Empire until work at the front of the building was finished.
"The council was also looking for an opportunity to show its appreciation to individuals and groups within the community who have shown their support for the project, by reaching deep into pockets and contributing hard cash."
The event will feature Consett-born singer Susan Maughan, Pop Idol contestant Aaron Bayley and comedian Stu Francis.
Along with thanking groups such as the Friends of the Empire, who raised funds for the revamp, the event aims to showcase the improved facilities to guests from the Arts Council.
The refurbishment includes a downstairs bar and lounge, 514 new seats with extra leg room, a new sound system more toilets and full access for disabled people.
