FIONA Needham picked up a riding and training double at the Zetland point-to-point held at Witton Castle on Monday.
The first leg came when Robin Tate's mare Phyllis (Hurworth) took the intermediate race. The David Smith-trained Kanona (J Walker/Hurworth) tried to make all, but Needham timed her run to perfection, taking it up just after the last and pulling away for a five-length win.
The blinkered Kanona kept on well for Nigel Smith to finish second, eight lengths clear of the Carole Barr-trained Lord Nick (Cleveland), who kept on at one pace for Clive Mulhall.
Needham completed her double when racecourse debutant Gudasmum (P Wright/Middleton) won the second division of the maiden. On this evidence the five-year-old is well named as her dam Comarch was a more than useful performer between the flags.
Gudasmum, who jumped particularly well, won by half a length at 14-1 from the Serena Brotherton-trained favourite Mr Bromley (D Brotherton/Middleton), ridden by Ben Woodhouse. He was 20 lengths clear of the Grant Tuer-trained, owned and ridden The Murphy Meister (Hurworth).
Serena Brotherton trained and rode Legendery Line (Middleton) to win the ladies open. He ran on well for a five-length win from Grania Furness's Pharlindo (Hurworth), ridden by Annabelle Armitage.
Pharlindo, who seems to have been rejuvenated by running in ladies opens, was two lengths in front of the favourite Quango (Yorks PTP Club/Pendle), ridden by his trainer Jo Foster.
The Nigel Tutty-owned and trained Little Worsall (Hurworth) completed four successive wins in points when taking the men's open. The ten-year-old was produced late on the scene by Tutty, cruising to the front and pulling away on the flat.
He was heavily eased on the flat for a winning distance of only a length, but 20 lengths would have been a fair reflection. The Kevin Robson-trained Batoutoftheblue (M Armstrong/Tynedale finished second under Tom Davidson, with the Grant Tuer-trained and ridden Fornaught Alliance (Yarm Skip Alliance/Hurworth) a further length down in third.
Neil Edmondson's Master Adam was the outsider of four at 12-1 in the members race, but he put up an exhibition round of jumping to lead from flag fall to post, recording a two-length win under David Raw.
The Chris Dennis-trained Knight Templar (J Orton) found a 10lb penalty too much. Ridden by Carole Dennis, he finished five lengths clear of Hessac (E Fenwick/Zetland).
Jo Foster trained and rode Durham Dandy (J Dwyer/Pendle) to win the restricted race by two lengths from the Sarah Dent-trained Journey (J Sawney/Cleveland), ridden by Lee Bates. Half a length back in third was Norman Way (J Cornforth/York & Ainsty).
Closest finish of the day came in division one of the maiden, where there was a deserved success for Richard Morley's In The Van (Derwent). In a great finish with the Chris Dennis-trained favourite Ellis Park (R Ogden/Hurworth), In The Van rallied under strong pressure from Michael Morley to win by a neck.
Ellis Park, whose rider Nicky Tinkler performed miracles to keep the partnership intact when the nine-year-old blundered badly when in front at the second last, finished 20 lengths clear of Duke's Court (J Cornforth/York & Ainsty), ridden by Phillip Cornforth.
* The Bilsdale point-to-point takes place at Easingwold tomorrow, first race 2pm
