TODDLERS and families disappointed at the last-minute cancellation of a visit from a top Government minister pressed ahead regardless with the opening of £1m community centre yesterday.
Health Secretary Alan Milburn had been due to open Gateshead Borough Council's Sure Start Blaydon and Winlaton scheme, but was unable to attend due to Parliamentary business in London.
A Gateshead council spokesman said: "Obviously we were disappointed that Mr Milburn couldn't come.
"But the event proved a great success with families delighted that the Mayor Councillor John Hamilton and council leader Councillor Mick Henry were on hand to open the centre for them.
"We hope Mr Milburn will be able to make some time next time he is in the region to come and visit the centre and see the excellent work being done."
The centre will provide a range of activities for under four-year-olds and their families and carers in the area.
Sure Start is a Gateshead council-backed project that aims to help enhance the lives of families with young children across the Gateshead area, by offering advice and support on issues such as education, childcare and healthy eating.
Sure Start partnerships also involve parents, carers and voluntary organisations, who all play an active part in deciding what services and activities will be offered through the schemes.
