TOMMY Steele has given a boost to a musical society's show which he helped to make famous.
He has sent a hand-written letter to Harrogate Operatic Players who take centre stage at the town's theatre from June 24 to 28 with the hit musical Half a Sixpence.
Tommy starred in the show 40 years ago and went on to make his name in the film, having emerged from Bermondsey, London, as one of rock and roll's first stars.
Signing himself Artie - his nickname in the show in which he played Arthur Kipps - Tommy Steele praises the society for their choice saying: "What a lovely thing to do.
"Half a Sixpence is some 40 years old - which gives you some idea of how old I am," wrote the 67-year-old who has kept himself fit by playing squash.
"I wish I could be there to celebrate, but I can't. I'll be thinking of you all, scene by scene, song by song. Have a great evening, it's a great show. Yours, Tommy Steele (Artie).
After he appeared in the London musical the show enjoyed success on Broadway.
But the entertainer still has fond memories of his role in the musical that helped to establish his career as an entertainer.
