PUPILS joined Redcar and Cleveland Mayor Councillor Eric Jackson to unveil a sculpture at the entrance to Coatham Marsh.
Youngsters from West Redcar School were at the opening ceremony yesterday along with residents who worked with Tees Valley Wildlife Trust and local artist Andy McKeown to create the sculptured entrance.
Made from galvanised steel, it follows the theme of nature and wildlife on Teesside.
"As you drive past the marsh it certainly grabs your attention," said Steve Ashton, the Wildlife Trust's education officer.
"We were pleased to receive the £5,000 Barclays Sitesavers grant, which allowed us to work with the local community and Andy to create an entrance feature that enhances the area."
Coatham Marsh reserve is one of 12 reserves managed by the Wildlife Trust and is an important feeding ground for wintering and migrating birds.
It supports 170 species of plants and more than 200 species of birds.
