POLICE have warned drivers that roadside checks will start next week for vehicles with defective tyres.
The campaign coincides with similar spot checks across the region, supported by the Tyre Industry Council, which will provide experts to assist police.
A similar initiative last year revealed that 7.5 per cent of the vehicles stopped and examined had at least one illegal tyre.
Another 14 per cent were worn below 2mm, while 85 per cent of the drivers stopped did not know the legal tread depth is 1.6mm.
Anyone found driving with illegal tyres risks a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points on their licence.
The checks in North Yorkshire begin next Monday.
