A SERVICE for people with special needs that was in danger of folding because of a lack of money, has been saved at the 11th hour.
The Learning Library, a registered charity based in Spennymoor loaning out toys and specialist equipment to people with learning difficulties, set up a scheme in east Durham last year.
But despite securing a core membership and a list of people wanting to join, the service was threatened due to a lack of funds.
Now, Durham Social Services' Easington district and Easington Primary Care Trust - which had provided funding for the first year - have stepped in with a grant of £5,000.
Jackie Heslop, co-ordinator for the Learning Library, said the money will keep the library scheme going in east Durham for at least another year while long-term funding is sought. It will also enable them to recruit another part-time worker.
She said: "We know from feedback we have received both in Easington and other areas that we provide a valuable service that would be greatly missed should funding dry up.
"We are very grateful to Durham Social Services' Easington district for allowing us the opportunity to continue to support people with special needs in their area."
