DURHAM's credit union is hoping to boost membership by organising payroll deductions.
Durham City and District Credit Union has attracted more than 70 members since it began at the start of the year.
It has three collection points and wants to establish more. It is also hoping that employers will take part in a payroll deduction scheme.
Union spokesman Tony Tribe said: "We have already talked to the county council and made overtures to the city council. Once we have got one of those on board, we can go to other employers.
"One or two have expressed an interest and they want to see how we work on the ground. We think payroll deduction could bring in scores of new members.''
The credit union offers savings and low cost loans and is particularly aimed at people on low incomes, although anyone who works or lives in the city can join.
Collection points are open on Wednesday mornings at Community House, Holly Park, Ushaw Moor, and on Fridays from noon to 1.30pm at St Nicholas' Church, Market Place, Durham.
As well as new members, the union is also looking for volunteers. Anyone interested is asked to call 0191-384 9133.
