DINERS and dignitaries gathered for a luncheon club's official launch yesterday.
MP John Cummings and Peter Campbell, the Mayor of Seaham, joined older Dawdon residents for the launch at Dawdon Community Centre.
Dawdon Diners meets every Thursday from noon to 2pm. Based at the community centre, it provides 30 people with lunch, as well as the chance to meet friends and acquaintances.
The club was developed by Dawdon residents Ruth Purvis and Carol Brown, who worked with Easington Primary Care Trust health development specialists Julie Englund and Lucy Crystal-Smith to obtain funding.
They obtained advice on the menus, and further assistance from Age Concern.
The club has proved so popular that there are already 18 people waiting to join.
Penelope Young, chairwoman of Easington Primary Care Trust, said: "It is never too late to improve health through changes in our diet."
