An army of Russian musicians were so keen to sample a world-famous beer they demanded a detour during their European travels.
Tales of Newcastle Brown Ale reached members of the Central Band of the White Russian Army, who were so eager to have a sup they demanded a visit to the city.
The musicians from Minsk are taking their Russian Spectacular on a 20-day tour of Britain and Ireland.
But the 49-strong band have allowed themselves plenty time to sample local brews.
Singer and band manager Vladimir Yaskevich said: "A number of the band particularly asked to appear in Newcastle because they have heard so much about the Brown Ale.
"We have travelled Europe sampling German beers. We want to see how Newcastle compares and possibly even visit St James' Park.
"The band remembers Kevin Keegan and know who Bobby Robson is. It would also be nice to have a trip round the brewery if we can fit it in."
Concert producer Norman Rogerson said: "They are normally vodka drinkers but they asked the organisers for a North-East venue to sample the local beers."
The Russian Spectacular features guest soloists from the world-renowned Bolshoi Opera and dancers from the Belarussian National Folk Dance Academy.
The concert takes place in Newcastle's City Hall on Wednesday, May 21.
