PUPILS from one of the UK's leading independent schools were welcomed on a science trip to the North-East yesterday.
The 25 children from the fee-paying St Paul's School in London watched human egg fertilisation at a Darlington clinic.
Headteacher Geoff Thompson said the idea was to introduce the boys to the notion that science is not something that only goes on in the nation's capital.
"It was an early start this morning but I am sure it will be worth it," said Mr Thompson, who graduated from Newcastle University.
"All the boys with us today are from a scholarship group. They are all very bright 13-year-olds," he said.
The pupils watched a demonstration of how sperm are injected into eggs at the Cromwell IVF Centre, in Darlington's Woodlands Hospital.
Dr Kamal Ahuja, medical and scientific director of the Cromwell IVF centre said he wanted to extend the invitation to schools from the North-East.
" It is good to let people know what is going on so we can demystify IVF," said Dr Ahuja, who has two sons at St Paul's.
