TWO children from Darlington got a taste of civic duties when they stepped into the Mayor's shoes for the day.
Amy McAlister and Rebecca Johnson, both 11, joined Mayor Doris Jones on her duties after winning the annual Junior Mayor and Mayoress competition.
Youngsters across Darlington, aged nine to 11- years-old, were asked to write a 250-word essay on what they like about Darlington and how they would like to improve it.
More than 350 children took part and Amy from Middleton St George Primary School and Rebecca from Harrowgate Hill Junior School were chosen as the winners.
Their day included visits to Darlington's police and fire stations and Teesside Airport as well as lunch at Walworth Castle where the red carpet was laid out especially.
They enjoyed a photo shoot and afternoon tea in the Mayor's Parlour with their families.
Coun Jones said: "Amy and Rebecca are a credit to their schools. They have shown real interest in the day."
