BRISTOL Rovers boss Ray Graydon could offer released Hartlepool United midfielder Tommy Widdrington a Football League lifeline.
Widdrington was yesterday handed a free transfer by Pool boss Mike Newell and the Bristol Rovers boss is now ready renew their long-term friendship in a bid to improve the fortunes of the struggling club.
Newell, who is likely to lose Graeme Lee on a free transfer and has already saw Gordon Watson depart, yesterday released both Widdrington and Brian Ross.
He offered new deals to Mark Robinson, Paul Smith, Paul Arnison and Jon Bass, while Jermaine Easter has already signed a new deal.
He admitted: "Tommy's decision was the biggest one for me. We have looked at what we need for next year and we know he has done really well for us.
"He has done a job which a lot of people don't realise because it is not a glamour job. We just feel that at a higher level you need more mobility, more legs.
"I could give excuses about the decision and say it's to do with the salary capping or wages, but I won't do that, I'll be honest with Tommy and honest with the fans.
"The decision hasn't been made since the end of the season, it's something as a manager you look at and weigh up all the time.
"Every level you go up, the game gets quicker and Division Two is no exception.
"Look at the Premiership now, it is full of players who are athletes - it's come on a long way in the last few years - and that in turn comes down to our level.''
But Widdrington, who netted two goals on what was his last appearance for Pool against Rochdale on Easter Monday, said: "I don't agree with his reasons but then again football is a game of opinions.
"Mike is new to the club and, to be fair to him, he has stuck with the same players, but I think he wants to put his own stamp on the club. I am gutted. I have spoken to some of the lads and they have said they can't believe it and they are gutted for me.''
Newell, only the third manager to lead a Pool team to promotion and linked with interest in Ipswich defender Lee Chaffey, promised: "Anyone who we bring in during the summer will be better than what we already have or have let go.
"If that doesn't happen then we are letting the fans and the club down and that won't happen.''
* Pool's season tickets go on sale on Monday.
