SIR Bobby Robson has been appointed as the new patron of a leading children's charity.
The Newcastle United manager was announced as patron of the Rainbow Trust at the trust's annual Rainbow Ball, at Newcastle's Marriott Gosforth Park Hotel.
Performing at the recent event was singer Paul Young and his band Los Pacaminos, and it was hosted by BBC news presenter Wendy Gibson.
Guests included Newcastle team members Alan Shearer, Shay Given and Gary Speed, Byker Grove stars, and Rainbow Trust patron Lord Redesdale.
The ball raised more than £74,000 for the charity and featured an auction with a Fiat Punto as the main prize.
Sir Bobby said: "I'm very honoured to accept patronage of this special charity, which is very close to my heart."
The Rainbow Trust provides support and respite care for families with seriously ill children. It can be contacted on 0191-386 4400, or at www.rainbowtrust.org.uk
