COUNCILLOR George Gray has been installed as the new Mayor of Sedgefield Borough Council.
Coun Gray, from Newton Aycliffe, received the chains of office from outgoing mayor Coun David Newell at the council's annual meeting yesterday.
A member of Great Aycliffe Town Council for 16 years and the borough council for eight, Coun Gray is a former Mayor of Great Aycliffe.
Over the years he has been heavily involved with the town's Stroke Club and St John Ambulance Brigade, which awarded him its highest honour of Serving Brother.
He has also been involved in many projects to benefit the youth of Newton Aycliffe.
Councillor Malcolm Iveson, who nominated him as the mayor, said: "He's held many positions and carried these out with honour, distinction and commitment and that's why I'm proposing him."
Seconder Councillor Angela Fleming said: "He's a totally committed councillor. He has been Mayor of Great Aycliffe Town Council and during that time he carried out his duties in an exemplary manner."
Coun Gray said he would be raising money for cancer charities during his year in office. He said: "I regard it as an honour and a privilege to take on the position of mayor of Sedgefield borough.
"I will endeavour to carry out my duties in a dignified manner that the position deserves."
Ferryhill Councillor Marie Predki, who was named as deputy mayor for the year, said: "It's a great honour for me personally and for my family."
