A SCHOOL'S commitment to sport and physical education has been recognised with the national Sportsmark award.
Parkside School, in Willington, has added orienteering and outdoor pursuits to its PE timetable but pupils still excel in traditional games such as football, cricket, netball and table tennis.
Close links with Parkside Community Association mean that a range of other activities such as Aikido, aerobics and dance can be followed outside school hours.
Staff encourage students to be active and eat well as a way of staying fit and healthy.
Headteacher Roland Sterry said: "Sport is one of the strengths of our school and we are in the process of preparing a bid for Specialist Sports College status.
"We will shortly be appealing to local businesses to support us as we try to raise the £50,000 we need."
