HARRY Potter mania may still be sweeping the nation, but when it comes to their books, the people of North Yorkshire still go for the classics.
Tradition ruled when library-users across the county took part in a poll to find what was their favourite book.
Jane Austen's enduring Pride and Prejudice was the clear winner, leaving JK Rowling's young wizard far in her wake.
North Yorkshire County Council conducted the poll through their network of library and information centres, as part of the Big Read campaign. Nearly 800 votes were cast.
The intention was to identify the favourite books across the county to compare the results with the national vote, which will be the subject of a special one-off programme on BBC television this weekend.
The county council's executive member for libraries, Coun John Dennis, said: "The campaign has really captured the public's imagination.
"It not only highlights how popular books still are, but the importance of making books readily available."
