FIREFIGHTERS were called to a blaze in the loft of a town house in Bishop Auckland yesterday afternoon.
The roof of the semi-detached property, in Durham Road, was destroyed in the fire.
The alarm was raised shortly after 4pm, and two appliances from Bishop Auckland and a retained appliance from Spennymoor attended.
Sub officer Andy Whitehead, in charge of white watch at Bishop Auckland fire station, said: "As we approached the house, we could see flames coming through the top of the roof, so called for a third team.
"The couple who live there were already out of the building, so our main concern was to save the rest of the house and the adjoining property.
"Most of the heat escaped from the roof, but we were still faced with a wall of fire in a closed space, but it was not as bad as it could have been."
