DURHAM City MP Gerry Steinberg has become a grandfather.
The Labour MP, who is standing down at the next General Election, and his wife, Meg, are toasting the birth of their first grandson, Jacob.
Daughter Lyanne gave birth to the 9lb 1.5oz boy at the University Hospital of North Durham, in Durham, on Thursday.
Lyanne, a solicitor, is married to lawyer Andrew Clinton, who was present at the birth, shortly after 3am.
Mr Clinton said that like father and grandfather, Jacob would grow up to be a Sunderland football supporter.
But any hopes Jacob has of following in his grandfather's footsteps as Durham's MP may be hindered if Labour's National Executive Committee maintains its stance after ordering an all-female shortlist of candidates in the bid to find Mr Steinberg's successor.
