PUBLIC lavatories have been given a £20,000 makeover in time for the tourist season.
The toilets in York's Parliament Street have been reopened following a complete refurbishment and redecoration.
The work was part of the council's £45,000 programme of improvements to the city's public conveniences ahead of the main tourist season.
The Parliament Street toilets have been given new floors and improved ventilation.
An attendant will be on hand in the women's toilets from 8am until 8pm to ensure they are maintained to a high standard.
City centre manager John Wood said: "The public conveniences in Parliament Street are a vital amenity for residents and tourists.
"We have been concerned that some of the city's loos have not met the high standards we would expect, and I'm pleased that the refurbishment work will bring real improvements."
