A STREET was sealed off and several houses lost their electricity supply following a car crash yesterday.
It happened shortly after 6am when a 21-year-old man lost control of his Vauxhall Corsa, which left the road at Cedar Terrace, Fence Houses, near Chester-le-Street.
The vehicle demolished a lamp-post and became wedged between an electricity pylon and a garden wall.
Both the car and pylon burst into flames, and several nearby homes lost their electricity supply. The area was sealed off as electricians made the pylon safe.
Sub-officer Tom Melia, of Tyne and Wear Fire Brigade, said: "Paramedics took the man to hospital. It looked like he broke his nose and had cuts and bruises to his face. He was a very lucky man."
