AN American who has settled in Darlington is urging residents to join her fight against crime.
Dawn Bickerstaff, 50, had the tyres of her car slashed by vandals just months after moving into Victoria Embankment with husband Edward last year.
Now she has set up a Neighbourhood Watch group for the road and has persuaded 12 of her neighbours to join.
"We moved here in August and on Christmas Eve lots of us on the road had our tyres slashed," she said.
"I'm very much worried about crime and this helps my sense of security. It is also about trying to bring a sense of community to the area. So far people have been really friendly and enthusiastic about it. I am hoping more will join in."
Mrs Bickerstaff, who is originally from Michigan, is also organising a front garden competition for residents which will be judged in July.
"I'm still settling in but doing this makes me feel like I'm helpful and am getting to know people," she said.
Darlington Neighbourhood Watch liaison officer Jacqui Snowball, who is trying to revive interest in the initiative, praised Ms Bickerstaff's efforts.
"Although new to the town and indeed the country, Dawn has quickly grasped the idea and is an inspiration to her neighbourhood," he said.
