PARISHIONERS are pulling together to raise funds for the restoration of a church.
Four years ago, the St John's Tower Fund was established to restore St John's Church, in Seaham.
Since 1840, it has attracted worshippers from throughout the town, providing a focal point for community life.
But in recent years, it has fallen into disrepair, with stonework on the tower and chancel windows crumbling away.
People rallied to support the appeal, which had a target of £150,000, organising raffles and fairs, and setting up a fundraising luncheon club.
Many have also paid £60 for a brass plaque in memory of a loved one, and former mayor Peter Campbell donated £1,000 from his appeal fund.
Now, following a Lottery donation of £64,000, the appeal is close to succeeding, and work has started on the first phase of repairs.
Churchwarden Betty Geary said: "We had to raise £76,000 ourselves and we are getting there.
"There's light at the end of the tunnel, but we won't stop.
"We've got about another £10,000 to raise."
Ms Geary said the church's restoration fitted in perfectly with Seaham's regeneration.
"It's the centre of Seaham and it's a beautiful church," she said.
"After we raise the £150,000, we will look at restoring the bells."
