VILLAGERS have had their first glimpse of a bus that will improve transport in the community.
Coundon and Leeholme Community Transport Initiative unveiled the 15-seater minibus at a fun day recently.
Funding for the bus was boosted with a £20,000 grant from the Settlement Renewal Initiative and £10,000 from the Children's Fund.
It will be available to residents and community groups in the Coundon ward.
Under the scheme Coundon and Leeholme Community Transport Initiative will join forces with Dene Valley Community Transport to improve links between the villages in the area.
Former Newcastle United footballer Alan Shoulder launched the scheme at Coundon and Leeholme Community Project Centre.
He said: "For a long time the people here have had nothing, this transport scheme brings opportunities for group and club outings, and will help the elderly or young families who don't have access to their own transport."
Mr Shoulder also plans to drive the bus occasionally after an appeal was made for more volunteer drivers.
