FROM this newspaper 100 years ago. - The clatter of horses galloping in the direction of the Fire Brigade Station on Saturday, shortly before mid-night, attracted a big crowd to the fire station to learn where the fire was. The enquirers were informed that the outbreak was at the Darlington Corporation Waterworks, and a few hardy ones went out after the steamer, to find that a secret trial of the new horsing arrangements was being effected, and that there was no fire at all. The secret that a false call would be given was well kept, and the result was a fair trial, both to the permanent staff and to Mr O'Dowd who is now horsing the brigade. The test in every way was satisfactory, and indicated that the new arrangements for the horsing of the brigade were almost in order.
