A DISTURBED man who stabbed his father and burned down the family home was given an extended six-year jail sentence yesterday.
Delusional Paul Jennings, 32, left his parents with only the clothes they were wearing, because they ware not insured, and a £50,000 repair bill for their gutted house.
Teesside Crown Court heard he attacked his 70-year-old father, Leslie, with two knives, ran amok with an axe and a hammer, attacked policemen trying to calm him and threw stones at traffic.
Jennings told lawyers he wanted to be locked up for many years so he could be treated at Grandon top security hospital.
Psychiatrists said he did not have a mental illness but he had a personality disorder.
The court heard that on January 7 last year Jennings was demanding money from his parents to buy drink.
Deborah Sherwin, prosecuting, said Jennings stabbed his father until the blade broke, then pursued him into the street with another knife. He then set fire to the house in Billingham, Teesside.
John Gillette, defending, said Jennings wanted to kill himself in the fire but was driven out by the heat. He acknowledged his difficulties and was desperate to receive treatment.
Jennings pleaded guilty to arson and wounding with intent. He was jailed for six years, four years with a two-year extension on licence when he will be subject to prison recall.
